Original Kirk Conchan Church

Posted on October 13, 2015 by Peter Killey

This is the original church where St Peter’s Church in Onchan now stands. In fact this little church was better known as Kirk Conchan and the origins of the old church which stood some 50 yards to the north of the present St. Peter’s church date back to the 12th Century. This picture is depicted in a stained glass window in the present St. Peter’s Church in Onchan. St Mary’s Roman Catholic Church

Posted on September 27, 2015October 9, 2015 by Peter Killey

Two images of St Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Hill Street in Douglas. The first view is from Bucks Rd with it’s junction of Finch Rd. The second view is a wide angle lens shot taken from within the grounds of this beautiful Church. This fine building, whose foundation stone was laid in 1857, opened on the 4th August 1859 with great ceremony which caused not a little adverse comment from certain elements in the Methodist community. Built to the design of Henry Clutton in French Gothic early 13th Century style. Interior decoration includes work by Peter Paul Pugin and Sir Giles Gilbert Scott. The Old Cronk y Voddy Church Bell

Posted on July 1, 2015July 3, 2015 by Peter Killey

On the way home yesterday on the Staarvey Road I decided to take a picture of the unusual Bell Tower on the barn of Ballakaighen Farm. I bumped into the owner of the farm a Mr Donald Cannan (as in piccie) this man who is 85 years of age is still a working farmer and an absolute true Manxman and Gentleman. Donald told me the story of the old Cronk y Voddy Church undergoing extensive renovation in the late 70’s and how he went to the auction room and bought the bell which now stands above his barn on the Staarvey Road in Cronk y Voddy, the bell is still used now and again, especially on Tynwald Day which is also the the Cronk y Voddy Sports day and the Cronk y Voddy Eisteddfod. Donald also mentioned that the old bell can be traced back to 1852 which makes this original bell 163 years old (in 2015). Donald told me all sorts of lovely stories about his life and it was an absolute honour to have met him, he even rang the bell for me to prove it still worked. Bride Rectory

Posted on April 17, 2015 by Peter Killey

What a lovely building which I have never spotted before. Pretty sure it is private ownership now and not part of the Church. Bride is one of the three parishes on the Isle of Man which have Rectories (Andreas, Ballaugh and Bride) all remaining parishes have Vicarages.
