Dragon Harald Fairhair entering Peel Harbour

The largest replica Viking longship ever built is seen here arriving in Peel today. The Dragon Harald Fairhair, hand-built in Norway over a period of two years will spend one night moored on Peel Quayside.

The longship’s length (57ft/35m) is about half the size of a football pitch and it has 25 pairs of oars.

The longship was named after Harald Fairhair, the king who unified Norway.

That is a splendid sight. Did it arrive with its sail up?

    • Hi Eleanor unfortunately not, it suffered a problem when it’s mast snapped en-route to the Island.

Oops – I hope that didn’t happen to any of the original Viking raiders as it would have been a long way to row across the North Sea.

  3. The Viking landings, when I was about twelve years old my cousin and me, were on a float, and won second prize, and our photos in the paper.
