The Quakers Burial Ground In Maughold

Above Ballafayle in Maughold lies this Quakers burial ground.

The burial ground is alongside the narrow road through Ballajora, the plaque on the entrance to the site states that William Callow gave the piece of ground as a burial place for Quakers, and he was buried here in 1676.

The inscription on his headstone reads;

William Callow
of Ballafayle
1629 – 1676
suffered long persecution
frequent imprisonment
and finally banishment
from his native Island
for his faith.

    This was always a favourite spot on the island – it is so peaceful.

    living at ballachrink ballaglass back in the early 70s i would walk this high road in all seasons and stop awhile here to meditate such a gentle quiet held here though the history of this place is both sad and dark let us hope such narrow minded persecution is never again visited upon our island ..

    Thank you for this picture! This is my 9th Great Grandfather, and you have helped me to put a couple more pieces into my geneology. Looks like a beautiful spot.

    Is there a record anywhere of who is buried at this site?
