The former Traie Meanagh open air swimming baths in Port Erin opened in June 1899 and hosted swimmers for more than 80 years, closing as baths in 1981. It was then turned into a fish farm which ceased to operate in 1990.
On image 2 you can see all the abandoned changing rooms and viewing areas, it must have been a hive of activity in it’s heyday!

Such a shame this outstanding outdoor swimming pool is now derelict. Sure it would be a hive of activity again if restored #iom #places of beauty# culture iom
I remember this swimming pool in its heyday. We used to have a family holiday every year in Port Erin in the 1950’s and 1960’s. I remember a group of us as young teenagers going down from the hotel to a swimming gala there. Some of the young female staff entered a beauty contest. The weather was hot and sunny and the pool was packed. It was such a memorable day. Our parents stopped taking us in 1967 and I didn’t go back until 2009. What a change. I looked at a derelict pool from the cliff path. I felt very sad I had such good memories.
Great memories Andy but its looking very sad at present and has been like that most of my life.
I remember the pool so well from back in the 1950’s and 60’s. We had many family holidays in Port Erin. We liked to go down as early as possible to swim. One morning they had emptied and refilled it overnight but didn’t tell us. It was freezing! Never had we got out so fast.
We are visiting the Island this summer, such a shame it’s no longer in use.
I see the Cosy Nook café is still there. They made amazing milk shakes with a big portion of ice cream in them
i remember takingpart in a diving competition years and years ago and received a small prize if i remember correctly it was a fill and empty pool directly from the sea
I learned to swim in that pool and used to go almost every day in the School Holidays. Hot still Vimto and Nice biscuits to warm up afterwards. It was always crowded for the Swimming Galas (were they on a Thursday?) with people sitting on the banked tiers cut out above – a a big screen put up on the top wall so folk couldn’t watch without coming in and paying! What a shame it’s been allowed to deteriorate like this – especially now outdoor swimming has become so fashionable again.
