Strathallen Castle – Port St Mary

Posted on October 5, 2022October 5, 2022 by Peter Killey

(5 images in this post) Strathallen Castle – Port St Mary Strathallen Castle, formerly the Clifton Hotel in Port St Mary and the former home of Ronnie and Mary Aldrich, this fine property was built on a promontory which has superb views of Port St Mary Bay and the rugged cliffs towards the Chasms. Look at the little bridge leading to St. Thomas’s Isle which was once a private boat launch. The property is in disrepair now but what a beautiful place to live! Glion Kiark “Glen of the Grouse”

Posted on October 4, 2022October 5, 2022 by Peter Killey

(4 images in this post) Glion Kiark “Glen of the Grouse” This is the site of an old slate quarry workings at the foot of Sartfell Mountain, this building is clearly visible when looking approximately South-East from the TT Course half-way up Barregarrow Hill coming out of Kirk Michael. This quarry originally employed about twenty quarrymen, many of whom were Welsh, who came over to the Island following the closures of quarries in their homeland. It closed in about 1874 due to the poor quality of the slate and the buildings subsequently fell into disrepair. The ruins are those of the blacksmiths shop, stables, a pay office and accommodation for the men. The belfry at the end of building deceptively gives it the appearance of an old church. In fact, the bell which it once housed was used to signal…

Milner’s Tower – Port Erin

Posted on July 27, 2022July 28, 2022 by Peter Killey

(4 images in this post). Milner’s Tower on Bradda Head in Port Erin was built in 1871 by public subscription as a memorial to the benefactor of Port Erin, William Milner, who did much to help the village fishermen and the poor. Milner was a famous safemaker from Liverpool and the unusual shape of the Tower represents a key and a lock.
