Tom The Dipper – Above Ballakilpheric

On the road heading up to the “Sloc” and high up above Ballakilpheric is this lovely little memorial to “Tom the Dipper” the views from this idyllic position overlooking the South of the Island are absolutely magnificent on a fine day

The stone plaque says “Site of the cottage built by Thomas Shimmin, poet and baptist preacher, aided by his wife Nell”.

The image was captured on my Sony HX20V camera, resized and cropped  in Adobe Photoshop CS6.

  1. 1965 – out on a school Treasure Hunt organised by Buchan School PTA – The clue read ‘ Sounds like a shepherd who rids sheep of ticks – at his ruined abode lies number 6.

However to those of us who lived n Douglas and had never heard of Tom the Dipper’s Hut it was a bit too cryptic.
