The magical, mystical, beautiful and truly original Fairy Bridge at Kewaigue, Braddan. Standing here made me feel like I was not alone, so eerie but so very peaceful… There are trinkets placed in the wall and flowers all around, and as you can see there is a wreath placed at the top of the arch of the Fairy Bridge. Tower of Refuge Organised Walk – 7th April 2011
Popped down to take some images of this organised walk to the Tower of Refuge tonight, there were literally thousands of people queuing to walk out to the Tower at low tide, I just took some images from the Promenade walkway (basically because I could not be bothered queuing and it was starting to rain). The image was taken on my Nikon D80 SLR with a Nikon 18-135 F3.5/5.6 G AFS DX lens and cropped in Adobe Photoshop CS5. Click on either of the images for a larger view!
Market Hall – Market Hill, Douglas – Built 1899
Opened in 1899, this Victorian market building still operates as a market to this day. The building is situated on the junction of Market Hill and North Quay in downtown “Old Douglas” and is owned by Douglas Borough Council (Ratepayers of Douglas). The below image was captured on my Fuji X10 camera resized and cropped in Adobe Photoshop CS5 Click on the image for a larger view.
Jane Crookall Maternity Home (former) – Douglas
This former but original Jane Crookall Maternity Home became fully functional as a dedicated Maternity Home in 1938 and closed in 1992, this building, where I was born is now administration offices for the Department of Social Care. The property which had been bought and modified for the purpose by the then Mayor of Douglas, Alderman A B Crookall for a lasting memorial for his wife Jane. The building is situated on Demesne Road in Douglas is now called Crookall House and if my memory serves me right there used to be a figure of a stalk situated on the roof above the front doors! There have been some very famous people born in this building (apart from me!!) i.e. Robin Gibb, Barry Gibb and Maurice Gibb from the Beegees 🙂 there are plenty more I am sure! Also if my memory serves me right the rooms to the right of the front door were the delivery rooms! Thornton Lodge – Peel Road in Douglas
This quaint little lodge is situated on one of the busiest main roads on the Island, “Thornton Lodge” is sited in the grounds of the Former “Thornton” which was a mansion house accessed along Peel Road in Douglas (opposite Hills Meadow) and is now the HQ for the Department of Education and Children in the relatively newly constructed “Hamilton House”. The Vampires Grave in Malew Churchyard
Before I give you some history into this chained grave, non of this info can be fully supported and maybe the subject of Isle of Man myth! This rather strange grave brings many visitors to Malew Churchyard and as can be seen by the image it is iron staked at each corner and randomly heavily chained to allegedly keep the vampire in! The alleged Vampire was a Mr Hassal who died aged 54, when Mr Hassal died the Undertakers were not allowed to bring his body onto the consecrated church grounds so rumour has it that they loaded his body into the grave from behind the wall, it was then covered in a heavy slate slab and staked with iron posts and iron chains. To add to this conundrum Mr Hassal’s wife Margaret is also buried in this chained grave!
