The Great Union Camera Obscura – Douglas Head

The Great Union Camera Obscura is one of only four remaining camera obscuras in the British Isles.

Unlike other structures, which were built for astronomical purposes, the Isle of Man’s camera obscura which nestles into the hillside on Douglas Head was built in the 1890s purely as an attraction for the flourishing Manx tourist industry.

Here is a small article that I added to this website about the Camera Obscura in May 2005 Click Here

The image was captured on my Nikon D80 DSLR with a Nikon 18-70 F3.5/5.6 G AFS DX lens, cropped and resized in Adobe Photoshop CS5.

  1. The enhancement works nicely on this one. There’s a three-dimensional effect which suits the scene really well.

  2. According to my mother her father, my grandfather, John Joseph Cowley supposedly a carpenter/joiner was involved in the construction of the C.O. as well as the Roller-coaster that used to be on Onchan Head. I have yet to find any proof of either of these stories.
